WAVA Grades K-5

Elementary School Academics

How Online Elementary School Works
At Washington Virtual Academies (WAVA), we believe all students should wake up excited to learn and that true learning starts by recognizing each child’s innate curiosity and sparking the excitement of discovery.

That’s why WAVA uses the K12 curriculum. It was created by an experienced team of educators using proven instructional approaches. At the elementary level, students take courses in the core subjects listed below. Beginning in grade 3, they also take a self-guided elective course in music or a world language.

A Strong Foundation for Your Child’s Academic Journey
The elementary curriculum focuses on developing fundamental skills and teaching the key knowledge building blocks each student needs to master the major subject areas, meet state standards, and complete more advanced coursework. Our personalized approach means students can go as fast or slow as they need to.

Bringing Lessons to Life
Lessons come alive with a rich mixture of online and hands-on materials including interactive animations; printed books with beautiful illustrations and narrative, original music and videos; and materials for hands-on experiments.*

Formal and informal assessments follow lessons, so you can be sure your child has mastered a concept before moving on. Built-in planning and progress tools make it easy to stay on track. And with hundreds of lessons per subject, students can dive deeply into areas of interest.

Recurring Themes
Throughout our K–5 courses, you’ll find repeated themes that build on the previous grade’s teaching and weave an ever-richer tapestry of knowledge. That means your child may be reading literature from the same time period as the art or history lesson being studied. A story about a king who lost his wife and built a monument to her dovetails with an examination of the architecture and history of the Taj Mahal.

Choice of Standard or FLEX Program
Families can choose the standard WAVA program or the new FLEX Program. Both use the same quality curriculum from K12. The standard program features required online synchronous sessions called Class Connects, which is best for students who need live instructional time with teachers. The FLEX Program has only one required Class Connect each week and is well-suited for independent learners with engaged Learning Coaches.

Highly Capable Program
WAVA’s Highly Capable Program provides enrichment services for the most highly capable students. Highly capable students are those who perform, or show potential to perform, at significantly advanced academic levels when compared with others of their age, experiences, or environments. Highly capable students generally have outstanding abilities in intellectual aptitude, specific academic abilities, and creative productivity within a specific domain.

While WAVA offers a comprehensive selection of courses, not every K12 K–8 course is available to WAVA students. Information on specific courses are provided upon enrollment. For details, please ask your Personal Admissions Liaison (PAL) during the enrollment process.
